Hawaii, the only island state and the southernmost state in the United States. Hawaii consists of the Hawaiian Islands and a few other geographically unrelated islets located near the center of the northern Pacific Ocean. The state is composed of eight main islands and 124 islets, reefs, and shoals. Honolulu, the capital and largest city of Hawaii, lies about 3900 km (about 2400 mi) from the western coast of the United States mainland. |

The state of Hawaii is a chain of rugged islands, coral reefs, and rocky shoals located in the North Pacific Ocean. It occupies all except for the 2 square miles (5 square kilometers) of the Midway Islands. The Hawaiian Archipelago is crossed near its northwestern end by the Tropic of Cancer. It is some 2,400 miles (3,860 kilometers) away from the West coast of the United States mainland. There are about 132 named islands and islets in the chain, which curves 1,523 miles (2,451 kilometers) southeast to northwest. Hawaii's land area of 6,425 square miles (16,641 square kilometers) is less than that of any other state except Connecticut, Delaware, and Rhode Island. The islands of Hawaii are the worn tops of great volcanoes. They were raised from the bottom of the ocean by tremendous upheavals millions of years ago. Because of their volcanic origin, the islands do not have the variety of physiographic regions usually found in the other 49 states.
Recreation opportunities abound throughout the Hawaiian Islands. Visitors and locals alike can enjoy a myriad of water-oriented sports on every island. The National Parks and forest reserves on many islands support hiking, camping and viewing archaeological sites. Oahu contains the capital, Honolulu, and is the most commercialised, while Hawaii is the biggest island. Oahu has two diagonal mountain ranges (the Waianae and Koolau), with many beautiful waterfalls. Hawaii is cloaked in macadamia orchards and coffee plantations. The islands support rainforest, green flatlands and a variety of other climates – in fact, of 13 climatic regions, Hawaii has all but two. Physically and psychologically, Hawaii stands apart from the USA, with an ethnically diverse population and a rich Polynesian heritage.
