Arizona, state in the southwestern United States. It is a land of seemingly limitless space and tremendous vistas. Arizona was the last of the 48 adjoining continental states to enter the Union. From its admission on February 14, 1912, to the admission of Alaska and Hawaii in 1959, it was the youngest state. |

Northward, Alaska extends the United States to Point Barrow on the Arctic Ocean. About one third of Alaska is within the Arctic Circle. Westward, the Aleutian Islands chain stretches across the Pacific Ocean into the Eastern Hemisphere. Attu, Alaska's westernmost island, is located at 173o E longitude. This is directly north of New Zealand. The distance from Attu, in the Aleutians, to Ketchikan, in the Panhandle, is greater than the distance from San Francisco, Calif., to New York City.
The recreation opportunities in Arizona are endless. Many visitors and locals enjoy rafting and kayaking in the Colorado River. Other opportunities include camping, hiking and backpacking in the ruin-filled canyons of the state. The large reservoirs along the Colorado River offer opportunities for boating, waterskiing and fishing. The high mountains offer winter opportunities that many don't normally associate with this state including downhill skiing, snowboarding, cross-country skiing and snowmobiling. Arizona contains some of the most spectacular scenery in the whole of the USA. The Grand Canyon, the Painted Desert National Park and Petrified Forest National Park (comprising the Painted Desert in the north and Rainbow Forest in the south) are just some of the highlights. Phoenix, the largest city in the State, shares borders with Scottsdale, the primary resort destination in Arizona. Both cities have a variety of accommodation and attractions, unique shopping, fine art galleries and many cultural events. Other State attractions include Tucson, the second-largest city; Saguaro National Park; Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum; six national forests, including Kaibab National Forest and Tonto National Forest; Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park; Hoover Dam; Montezuma Castle National Monument; and Tombstone, site of the infamous shoot-out at the OK Corral.
To experience the diversity of Arizona's terrain individuals can visit the most celebrated site in the state, the Grand Canyon. This mile deep canyon supports a variety of life zones, which are evident as visitors descend toward the Colorado River from the rim. The highest point in the canyon, Boreal life zone, lies on the North Rim at 9,100 feet. The lowest point of the canyon lies in the Sonoran life zone close to 1,500 feet. Can't find it?
